I have been getting an increasing number of calls lately about off leash dogs, largely in and around Chamberlains Park but also across other areas in the Town, and I wanted to take some time to address this concern here this evening.
The Town of Conception Bay South has Animal Control Regulations which puts forth a prohibition the roaming of animals, as well as other provisions with respect to animal treatment and tethering. In addition to the town regulations, our enforcement division also operates within the provincial Animal Health and Protection Act to essentially cover all other matters with respect to animal safety and care.
It is clear in these policies that dogs are not permitted to be loose in public places, for reasons of which I won’t even entertain spending time over this evening. As a Town, we continue to do what we can to alleviate some of these ongoing issues and take proactive measures such as educating residents of our rules and regulations. But sometimes that only goes so far and depending on the situation we will issue a ticket to gain compliance.
While I would say you can continue to reach out to Council about some of these issues should you choose, I would encourage you to contacted humane services directly at 834-6552. They can be reached seven days a week and will investigate a situation at act accordingly.
It is also worth noting, we have a dog park in our Town to alleviate the need to have a dog off leash while walking through the park. I have used the dog park dozens of times; I know our Mayor and other members of Council as well. We have a combination of grass and gravel for our puppies to enjoy.
I know I say this time and time again, but please go out and enjoy our trails and natural areas but do so in a respectful way for everyone to enjoy.
Until next time,
Josh Barrett
